Hi everyone,
Last Friday I did a talk called “Save the world, write more efficient code”. The organizers of the Joy of Coding conference just published a great video of the talk. For those of you who do not like video (🙋), I also have a PDF version with lots of annotations and links per slide.
Computers and servers are likely 4% of our energy footprint, comparable with the whole aviation industry (!). The key message of the presentation is that the hardware people have done their thing to make data centers and servers a lot more efficient.
And now it is software’s turn to improve. In the talk I claim that there is easily a factor 100 efficiency difference between sloppy & dumb code on the one hand, and hyper-optimized solutions on the other end. Not only do I claim this, I bring data, and I also measure that ‘open.spotify.com’ wastes 45W of power on my desktop!
I hope you enjoy the video or the annotated slides, and I wish everyone a great weekend!
Bert
